ARTIST STATEMENT

Art reflects the life of the artist. Every human being sees the world in their unique way. We all try to communicate how we see with whatever vocabulary we learn. I’ve been painting a long time and my artistic vocabulary has become extensive. At its base I strive to make work that will have an impact on a viewer and that the pieces will keep the viewer’s eyes searching over the canvas. Certainly, the elements (color, texture, forms, contrasts, applications etc) are meant to assist that visual journey. My art method: For many years I made large (as large as 12ft by 10ft) free-form paintings collaging together paper and wood and loose canvas bits into which I then painted figures and other forms. I’ve cut and ripped up a lot of those works and pasted pieces of them onto canvases and continued to paint in, over and around the material. It is a method I continue to use even re-using recent paintings I don’t think are quite right. In my works the collage pieces were all created by me. Brushstrokes from my past, and bits from paintings over decades reappear in new paintings. The result of all this “time” is a rich depth of space, color, texture and action that hopefully commands the attention of viewers.
